April 29th - May 10th

What is a marine mammal? A dolphin! We will be read and discussed the nonfiction text "Dolphins" by Melissa Stewart. How did the author/illustrator help us learn more about ocean animals? How are mammals different than fish? We learned this and so much more as we dived in and talked about dolphins and then sharks.

Vocabulary from the book:

calf: a young dolphin

equator: an imaginary line halfway between the North and South Poles
mammal: a warm-blooded animal that drinks its mother’s milk, has a backbone, and hair
oxygen: an invisible gas in air and water that helps animals get energy from food
predator: an animal that eats other animals
prey: animals that are eaten by other animals

What is quick, quiet and has 5 rows of teeth? It is a shark! We read and discussed "Sharks!" by Anne Schreiber.

Vocabulary from the book:
cartilage: is light, strong and rubbery. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage.
extinct: plants and animals are no longer alive on Earth.
predator: is an animal that eats other animals
prey: animals that are eaten by other animals.
prehistoric: is a time before people wrote things down.
serrated: when something has a jagged edge.

Here are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this weekend:
  • See how many ocean animals you can name.
  • Have your child draw a picture of their favorite ocean animal and write a sentence about it.
  • Research an ocean animal they want to learn more about.

This week was their last week of homework! Thank you to all the families that worked hard on homework every week! It really makes a great impact on their learning in the classroom!

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f48aaa62da3fb6-field1

If you want to sign up to volunteer follow the link above.

Reminders:

**Students should wear sneakers for field day.

**Have a change of clothes in their bookbags.

**Sunscreen needs to be put on at home.

**Water bottles are encouraged but are the student's responsibility not mine! So disposable water bottles with their name on it may be best. We will probably only take water bottles for the last 2 activities after lunch.

***Mrs. Matyus will be absent that day so it will be myself and a substitute managing the class. Please remind the students to listen to volunteers and be on their best behavior.
