January 13th-17th and Overview of Quarter 3 Standards
I have a dream! Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Day? Who was he? What does equality mean? We will discuss and answer these questions as we read and discuss Ron’s Big Mission by Corrine Naden. Our story element focuses will be connecting to the character’s in the story and making inferences based upon facts we learn. How can we make a difference?
Vocabulary from the book:
important: having great meaning; value
nervous: an anxious or fearful feeling
serious: marked by careful thinking or consideration
budge: to change position slightly
tucked: to place in a snug, secured spot
Here are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this weekend:
- Have a conversation with your child about what makes them unique and special.
- Write about a dream you have for our world.
Reading and Language Arts Standards for Q3
- Identify all uppercase and lowercase letters
- Auditory recognition of rhyming and non rhyming words
- Consistently and independently blends, segments onsets and rimes of single syllable spoken words.
- Consistently and independently isolates and pronounces the initial, medial vowel and final sounds in three phoneme words (CVC- Consonant Vowel Consonant)
- Produces all 23 consonant sounds including hard/soft c and g
- Produces all 5 short vowel sounds
- Reads 50 or more sight words
- Reads independent level C
Writing:
- Detailed sentences that includes grade appropriate sight words and phonetically spelled words.
- Prints all upper and lowercase letters with consistency, accuracy and independence.
- Consistently and independently begins to capitalize the first word in a sentence AND the pronoun "I".
- Recognizes and names ending punctuation AND begins to use it in writing.
- Consistantly writes letters for most consonant and short vowel sounds.
- Multiple meaning words: example: knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck.
We've started addition within 5
This unit is all about combining sets and grasping a firm understanding of addition facts to 5.
combine: students will put numbers and objects together to get a bigger number or amount
add: to bring two or more numbers (things) together for a new total
Also in quarter 3:
- Count to 100 by ones and tens
- Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group. For example: by using matching and counting strategies.
- Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.
- Fluently add and subtract (subtraction coming soon) within 5.
In this unit, students will:
- Observe, classify and arrange objects/organisms into groups of living and non-living things.
- Construct their own explanations about how they can tell the difference between living and nonliving objects.
- Develop a natural interest in the world around them.
- Observe, compare, and sort rocks and other earth materials by their physical attributes.
In this unit, students will:
- Describe Martin Luther King Jr. and why he is celebrated (MLK Day)
- Identify Presidents day and describe people celebrated (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, current President)
- Identify the following Symbols: Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and White House
Civic Government and Understandings
- Demonstrate an understanding of good citizenship. b. Explain why rules should be followed.
- Describe examples of positive character traits exhibited by good citizens such as honesty, patriotism, courtesy, respect, pride, and self-control.
