October 1-5th
We've been busy with assessing and taking data for report cards and conferences! Conference week is coming up! I've heard from almost everyone. If something comes up and you cannot make your scheduled conference just please let me know. Oct 15th - Fri, Oct 19th, 12:15 Early Release for Conference Week
Week in review:
-Make a bat snack using a tootsie roll as it’s body, an Oreo broke in half as it’s wings, and candy corn as its teeth and white chocolate chips for his eyes.
For science: We had a great time finishing up exploring matter in the science lab. One of the stations the students got to observe and discuss the changes a pancake goes through! Yum! Up next we will be talking about and experimenting with gravity!
For math: We finalized 3D shapes:
Our 2D or Flat Shapes:
circle: a round shape
triangle: a shape that has three sides
square: a shape that has four equal sides
rectangle: a shape that has two short sides and two long sides
hexagon: a shape that has six sides
Our 3D or Solid Shapes:
cone: a 3d shape that has a circle bottom and a pointed top
cylinder: a 3d shape that looks like a can
sphere: a 3d shape that looks like a ball
cube: a 3d shape that has six square sides
Shape Features:
vertex/corner: the corner where 2 sides meet
side: a line in a shape
face: flat side of a shape
For Writing: We continued to explore multiple meaning words and did various activities with
the multiple meaning words we learned about.
October 11th is an early release and we will be doing our second STEM activity.
I posted about this in a previous blog post. If we could get small pumpkins and simple building materials donated for the class STEM challenge that would be amazing. The students will be working in 4 groups so I will need 20 small pumpkins for the activity. If every child could bring in at least 1 pumpkin that would be helpful and I can cover the last 2 we would need.
**If I do not get the donations we need I will have to plan something else or alter the activity.
Next week we will be reading about pumpkins! Our close read this up coming week will be ... Pumpkin Town! One of those books with a powerful underlying meaning!

Week in review:
For reading: Do
you know a nocturnal animal that flies? What
will we talked about it this week?
BATS! We read and
discussed the story Stellaluna
by Janell Cannon. We also read the nonfiction book Bats by Elizabeth Carney (we love National Geographic books!). We focused on character and setting within Stellaluna but also began to focus on the
major events in a story. It’s so important that our students can not only retell a story but they also understand what a major event is!
Vocabulary in the story:
swoop: To
sweep down from above suddenly
clutch: to
hold tightly
escape: to
get free
clamber: to climb in an awkward way
curious: earn to learn or know
Here
are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this weekend:
-Build a bat house: http://www.pbs.org/parents/wildkratts/activities/building-homes-for-bats/ -Make a bat snack using a tootsie roll as it’s body, an Oreo broke in half as it’s wings, and candy corn as its teeth and white chocolate chips for his eyes.
-Flap your arms like a bat’s wings to spell CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant: bus, cat, bat, etc.) and sight words. You can also flap for how many syllables in a word.
For science: We had a great time finishing up exploring matter in the science lab. One of the stations the students got to observe and discuss the changes a pancake goes through! Yum! Up next we will be talking about and experimenting with gravity!
