August 27-31st

For Reading: We read and discussed Helpers in My Community by Bobbie Kalman.  We found out what a community is.  We talked about careers and what we might want to be when we grow up.

Vocabulary in the book:
community: A place where many people live and work together
volunteer: A kind person who helps others and does not get paid for it
emergency: Dangerous things that happen suddenly
risk: a chance of getting hurt or losing something
For Math: We worked hard on teen numbers; identifying them, writing them and talked about the difference between teen numbers and "ty" numbers like 13 vs 30. As well as counting verbally --the goal for this quarter to verbally count to 50 but the end goal is 100! If your child cannot count to 100 count in the car or while cooking dinner, practice practice practice! If they can then challenge them with counting by 10s, 5s and maybe even 2s.
We will be starting shapes next; 2D and 3D! As you are in your car or at home, identify objects around the house and what shape they are. Example: A door is a rectangle.
cone: a 3d shape that has a circle bottom and a pointed top
cylinder: a 3d shape that looks like a can
sphere: a 3d shape that looks like a ball
cube: a 3d shape that has six square sides
circle: a round shape
triangle: a shape that has three sides
square: a shape that has four equal sides
rectangle: a shape that has two short sides and two long sides
hexagon: a shape that has six sides
vertex/corner: the corner where 2 sides meet
side: a line in a shape
face: flat side of a shape
For Writing: We worked hard on stretching our words. That means saying the whole word super slow to hear all the sounds in the word. This is a great technique to help them hear the vowels that glue the other sounds together.
If your child does not know a lot of letters and letter sounds they are going to struggle with reading and writing. Please practice these at home as well as sight words!
