Career Dress Up Day Friday August 31st

Friday, August 31st, is Career Dress Up Day. Your child should come to school dressed as what they hope to be when they grow up. This event is to help us teach our standard about Labor Day and why we celebrate it so please help them think of interesting careers and interesting ways to represent them in costume.

To give you a preview of the week ahead:

We will begin to read and disucss Helpers in My Community by Bobbie Kalman.  We will find out what a community is.  We will also talk about careers and what we might want to be when we grow up. There are so many people in our community that are unrecognized for their great work. This week we will be learning about all these community helpers such as firefighters, police officers, builders, electricians, plumbers, teachers, librarians, principals, doctors, nurses, dentists, paramedics as well as volunteers in our community.

Vocabulary in the book:

community: A place where many people live and work together
volunteer: A kind person who helps others and does not get paid for it
emergency: Dangerous things that happen suddenly
risk: a chance of getting hurt or losing something

Here are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this week!
  • Talk about what your child wants to be when they grow up.  Have them draw a picture of themselves in that career.
  • Talk about what you do if there is an emergency.  What number do they call?  What is your fire escape route?
