August 13th-17th
A great big thank you to all of our parents for making the first week of homework such a great success! There is nothing more important than working with your child and teaching them that learning and school is important. What a great first step into a successful school career for your child! Remember if life happens and you don't get to a night of homework just write me a note either in the homework notebook or the agenda. Thank you for your support!
Thank you Alicia Bennett (Zoey's Mom) and Heather Segura (James's Mom) for signing up to be our Room Moms!
Reading:
Making friends is a life skill that is important to have. Our focus this week was all about friendship. We read and discussed Huggapotamus by Steve Metzger. Throughout this week we learned what is a friend and how can we be a good friend to others. We are all unique in our own way and we should know that we all can be friends no matter what!
The big vocabulary words we learned from this book were:
delight: great pleasure; joy
waddling: to walk in short steps; back and forth
spotted: to notice or catch sight of
skidded: suddenly slide sideways
sigh: to breathe out a long breath
Writing: We are working on our handwriting. Trying to get those letters to touch all the right lines! Work on this at home as well. Strengthening those fine motor muscles is so important!
Science: We had our first science lab visit! Thank you to Meghan Marks (Amelia's Mom) and Heather Segura (James' Mom) for volunteering in the Science Lab!
Rules and Expectations:
Our class as a whole is really struggling with applying our rules or directions. We may say something like put the stick/rock down at recess only to find the child picked it up again right away when we walked away. Often this continues to a third time. The same is true for talking, making noises and putting hands on others. We are having to give reminders over and over so next week we will be giving less warnings and moving names more often for this kind of behavior. Please take some time to talk with your child about the importance of doing what we ask and not repeating poor choices over and over.

Math: We worked on counting strategies like crossing out what you counted to show you counted them already, and making your mouth and hands move at the same time. We also worked on writing numbers 0-10.

Online Resources:
I have set up both Kids A-Z which is great for reading leveled books and ReadingEggs for your children! The school buys these wonderful online programs for us so please use them! They will be on the next homework for "Technology Tuesday". Please allow your child to complete the ReadingEggs and MathSeeds (same login) "pretest" independently if they have not already done so on Monday in the computer lab as it places them in the program where they need to be. Keep the flyers that have all their login information, their username and password is their student ID number which is also written in the front of their agendas.
