Congratulations to our September Leader of the Month, Katherine!  In reading: Old MacDonald had a farm.  E-I-E-I-O!  This week was all about, you guessed it… the FARM!!  There are so many animals and so much to do on the farm.  What is your favorite animal?  Would you want to live on a farm?  This week we read Hogwash by Karma Wilson because on Wednesday we had an amazing time at the Art Barn!  Here are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this weekend: Talk about what they saw at the Art Barn. Have your child illustrate and write about their favorite animal on the farm. Pictures coming soon! For Writing:  We continued writing simple sentences and using the sight words and letter sounds that we know to help us in our writing. We also talked about and started activities with words that have multiple meanings for example:  For Math: We reviewed our 2D shapes and started our 3D shapes....

For Reading: We learned there are four seasons in a year:  Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.   Our focus this week was all about seasons. We read and discussed A Tree for All Seasons by Robin Benard. How does a tree change throughout the seasons?  Our story focus this week was all about the author. Who is the author?  What is his/her job within the story? Vocabulary: bare: not filled or covered cozy: giving a feeling of warmth bud: a swelling on a plant that can grow into a new part collect: to gather together chilly: Feeling cold Here are just a few activities you can do at home with your child this weekend: Talk about what different activities you do in each season such as sledding in winter, pick apples in the fall, etc. Draw a picture of a tree in each of the seasons. This week in review: For Reading: Apples are more than just a fruit.  Our focus this week was all about apples.  We read and discussed Apples for Everyone by Jill Esbaum. What are some facts about apples? We began to learn about nonfiction texts.  What makes a nonfiction story different than other stories we read? Vocabulary in the book: bloom: produces a flower ripe: fully grown and read to be harvested or eaten thud: the sound of one thing hitting another dribble: to drip slowly rot: to decompose or decay Here are just a few fun apple activities you can do at home with your child this weekend: -Cut an apple in half crosswise to see the star shaped seed pockets of the apple! -Cut an apple in half lengthwise and dip the apple in paint and use it as a stamp on paper. AESF Funding Drive

There are only 2 weeks left for our annual fund giving drive. The AESF Science Lab is made possible by your donations. Cobb County DOES NOT pay for any part of our amazing science lab, not even Mrs. Knobbe’s salary! We’re able to fully fund the AESF Science Lab including Mrs. Knobbe’s salary each year thanks to all of you! Mrs. Hallmark and Mr.Cohen love the AESF Science Lab so much they’ve agreed to KISS A PIG if we reach $30,000 by September 14th! For Reading: We read and discussed Helpers in My Community by Bobbie Kalman.  We found out what a community is.  We talked about careers and what we might want to be when we grow up. Vocabulary in the book: community: A place where many people live and work together volunteer: A kind person who helps others and does not get paid for it emergency: Dangerous things that happen suddenly risk: a chance of getting hurt or losing something For Math: We worked hard on teen numbers; identifying them, writing them and talked about the difference between teen numbers and "ty" numbers like 13 vs 30. As well as counting verbally --the goal for this quarter to verbally count to 50 but the end goal is 100! If your child cannot count to 100 count in the car or while cooking dinner, practice practice practice! If they can then challenge them with counting by 10s, 5s and maybe even 2s.
